Pinball FX

Pinball FX Brings a Frenzy of Flips to Home Consoles

Pinball has been around for a very long time, as some of the earliest machines were manufactured in the 1930s, with popularity exploding as the years went on. Virtual pinball games popped up as early as the Atari, and although they’ve never been as beloved as their real-world counterparts, they’ve etched out a niche community over the years. We all remember games like Sonic Spinball, Space Cadet, and Pokemon Pinball, but the world of virtual pinball has come a long way since then. Now, the free-to-play game, Pinball FX, is pushing the limits on what virtual pinball can achieve. Best of all, it’s available on every platform you can think of, including the Nintendo Switch.

A Reboot Done Right

Developed by Zen Studios, Pinball FX was released in 2023, and despite its name, it’s actually the fourth game in the Pinball FX series. The original Pinball FX first popped up on Xbox Live Arcade in 2007, and since then, Zen has been slowly perfecting the physics and feel of pinball within the virtual space. Running on Unreal Engine 4, the reboot of Pinball FX is available on almost every available system, boasts realistic physics, and offers both replications of real pinball machines and some entirely new experiences as well.

Like a standard pinball experience, Pinball FX encourages you to score as many points as possible on a given pinball playfield with three balls, but it also steps outside the box with some exciting non-traditional modes. You can challenge yourself with house rules, limiting your number of balls, flips, and time. If that’s not tough enough, online tournaments and leaderboards offer you another way to test your skill. Seasonal challenges can also be played, earning you cosmetic benefits via a simplistic and free battle pass system, and your wins are tallied with flashy trophies. Many of these unlockable goodies can be placed in your virtual arcade space, or added to your online player profile for bragging rights.

One of the coolest parts of Pinball FX is the recently added “questlines” mode, which offers a series of thematic challenges based on three different pinball machines. Like the customizable challenges, these questlines will test your flipping skills in several ways, such as trying to keep a score alive that’s constantly decreasing, hitting a high score with only one ball, and more. These challenges also grant you special power-ups, like the ability to slow down time for more accurate shots, trigger a timed score-doubler, and other inventive ways to shake up the standard pinball concept.

All the Best Pinball in One Place

As a free-to-play game, Pinball FX contains a trio of included playfields, but you’ll have to pay for the rest by downloading extra game packs. Luckily, the three free playfields are incredibly fun, and offer a nice variety in theme and gameplay style. For starters, you can live the life of a rootin’ tootin’ cowboy in Wild West Rampage, where you’ll blast through saloons, chase down criminals, and much more. In the Sorcerer’s Lair machine, all sorts of supernatural ghouls and ghosts will try to prevent your progress, but collecting all the gems will light the path toward victory. The final free game, Fish Tales, is a very popular replication of the 1992 pinball machine from Williams, which sees you casting your line in hopes of catching a monster fish and living to tell the tale.

In addition to Fish Tales, Pinball FX offers nearly 30 other replications of Williams pinball machines, including some of the most popular machines ever made. You can fight off martians in Attack from Mars, become a magician in Theatre of Magic, fight for a shot at the throne in Medieval Madness, and so much more. In my opinion, this is one of the best things about virtual pinball. If you ever plan on playing these machines in real life, Pinball FX is a great way to learn the rules and get an idea of the flow before you step up to the real deal.

Of course, Pinball FX is also bursting with other pinball playfields, with pretty much every type of theme you could hope for. Star Wars fans will eat up the 20+ playfields available, which covers everything from the original film trilogy to The Mandalorian, while comic book fans should enjoy the 20+ Marvel playfields, such as X-Men, The Invincible Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and many others. Pinball FX has a huge variety that should appeal to every sort of player, whether you love South Park, My Little Pony, Godzilla, Garfield, Kung Fu Panda, and many, many more.

If the idea of playing pinball on your Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, or PC sounds even remotely appealing, we can’t recommend Pinball FX enough. It’s a great game to play for a few minutes or get lost in for hours, offering a unique style of challenge that only pinball can provide. The free content is good enough to keep you playing for some time, and with dozens of licensed and original themes, there’s always a new playfield to check out. At the low low price of no dollars, it’s definitely worth it to download Pinball FX and give it a shot!
