New Mod Makes for Smooth and Simple 3DS Video Capture

Out of all the mainline Nintendo handhelds, the 3DS often gets the short end of the stick. Released between the original Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Switch, the 3DS was relatively successful, selling over 75 million units during its roughly 10-year-long lifespan. Despite its popularity, aftermarket mods for the 3DS are few and far between, with most mods simply offering improved software. However, video capture mods for the 3DS are still popular and prevalent, whether you’re looking to create online content or simply play your handheld on a bigger screen. Today, I’m taking a look at Loopy’s USB-C Video Capture Kit, which just might be the premiere capture solution mod for the Nintendo 3DS.

Loopy's USB-C Kit Takes Video Capture to the Next Level

Saving and sharing gameplay footage from a home console or gaming PC is usually a relatively quick process, as most modern hardware contains proprietary capture software to get the job done. While sharing video clips on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X will only take you a few clicks, the same can not be said for the Nintendo 3DS. Due to a lack of proper inputs, getting your gameplay off of the 3DS can be a bit of a challenge, but thankfully, there are a handful of solutions for this particular problem.

While other mods will likely get the job done, I’m focusing on Loopy’s USB-C Video Capture Kit, which promises to provide crystal clear imagery with minimal fuss. As the name would imply, this 3DS USB-C capture kit was created by a talented modder named Loopy, which works with “New 3DS XL” models and properly transfers the video and audio from both system screens. To give you an idea of how this mod works, I’ll break down the basic installation steps and explain its main features, but be sure to check out my video tutorial for any other information you might need.

How to Capture Video on the Nintendo 3DS

Your first step on the path to capturing video on a Nintendo 3DS XL is to pick up Loopy’s New3DSXL Capture Card, which should cost roughly $120 for the self-install version. If you’re particularly nervous about installing the kit, you can always order a console with the mod pre-installed, but a little confidence can go a long way in saving some cash. That said, you’ll need a bit of soldering knowledge and shell-trimming expertise, so be prepared before beginning your installation. The kit comes with the custom capture PCB, a handful of ribbon cables, and a USB-C cable to get everything connected. Of course, you’ll also need a “New” Nintendo 3DS XL console, as this mod only works on that particular hardware revision.

Once you have all the necessary parts, you’re free to crack open your 3DS and start installation. As always, be sure to keep track of any screws and bits that you remove, as these are tough to replace and can be easily lost in the shuffle. In addition to my video tutorial, you can find installation instructions for Loopy’s 3DS Video Capture Kit here, so be sure to follow them as closely as possible. Under the motherboard, you’ll find a plastic mid frame that needs a bit of trimming, so get out your cutting tools and make the proper adjustments before you move on to attaching ribbon cables. Each of the three ribbon cables need to be attached in precise ways, with the third requiring some soldering, so be sure to follow the linked instructions exactly as presented.

With the ribbon cables installed, you can now move onto the most daunting part of the install: trimming the 3DS shell. Using the dimensions of the USB-C cable as a guide, you’ll need to carve out enough room in your shell to house the custom PCB, as well as create a port for the USB-C cable. Once that’s done, all that’s left is to attach the ribbon cables to the PCB, re-install the analog stick, and solder the pair of wires coming from the PCB to the charging port. Assuming that you’ve done everything correctly, you’re now free to button up the 3DS and try out your new mod!

Loopy's USB-C Video Capture Kit Features and Final Thoughts

Loopy’s USB-C Video Capture Kit has everything you’ll need to record and stream your 3DS gameplay, or simply enlarge the video output on your PC monitor. Before you get started, you’ll need to download Loopy’s custom capture software, but that’s pretty much all you need. Once the software is installed on your computer of choice, all you have to do is plug in the 3DS via the USB-C cable, and you’re ready to get started. It’s important to note that this mod doesn’t really add any crazy new features, but instead, makes it super easy to save and share your gameplay with a variety of video options.

For starters, Loopy’s USB capture software allows you to combine or detach both of the 3DS screens, which makes it easy to adjust screen sizes in other software like OBS. However, you don’t need any additional software to save your video, as Loopy’s software lets you save your footage to any folder on your PC. Additionally, there are several adjustments that can be made to each recording, ensuring that you have the perfect resolution and codec for your project. In the software, there are sliders that control the video output quality, target FPS, and even a volume slider for quick, on-demand audio mixing.

Overall, Loopy’s USB-C Video Capture Kit is an excellent solution for players who want to stream 3DS gameplay. Not only does it provide clean footage with user-friendly software, but thanks to the USB-C charging functionality, you won’t need to worry about your system battery while creating content. There are a few downsides, notably the shell-trimming required during the install, along with a bit of latency when using the device, so these are factors you should consider before committing to the mod. Simply put, if you’re eager to capture your 3DS footage and you don’t mind putting in some elbow grease, then Loopy’s USB-C Video Capture Kit is one of the very best mods available.
