In 2017, Nintendo released their most successful console yet, as the Switch grew from a quirky system into one of the most beloved hybrid consoles ever made. Playable as either a portable or a home console depending on your mood, the Nintendo Switch has gripped audiences around the globe, selling over 130 million units since its launch. Now, you can keep your console cool while obtaining a significant increase in power, all thanks to a brand new Nintendo Switch fan mod that brings new life to broken hardware.
Keep Things Cool With This Breezy Nintendo Switch Fan Mod
I love my Nintendo Switch and innovative mods, which makes the TVii Switch Re-Shell Mod one of the most exciting projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on recently. This mod, created by Set, a game developer and Switch enthusiast, transforms your Switch into a dock-only home console. While you won’t be able to use the Switch in handheld mode with this mod installed, the pros vastly outweigh the cons.
Not only does the TVii Switch Re-Shell Mod keep your console cool with its hefty fan, but it also works with overclocked hardware, leading to a better technical experience than a stock Switch. Best of all, this mod was created as a way to make a working console out of dead hardware and can be fully reversed at any time.
How to Install the Best Nintendo Switch Fan Mod
Installing the Tvii Switch Re-Shell mod is a pretty straightforward affair, but it’s important to note that overclocking your system can be risky if you’re unfamiliar with the installation, so keep this in mind when performing this mod. To give you an idea of what’s involved, I’ll break down the basic installation steps, but please refer to my full Nintendo Switch fan mod tutorial on YouTube for more detailed instructions.
This mod kit contains a few parts to pay attention to, starting with the three-part shell that will house your electronic components. Of course, the mod also includes a powerful 80mm fan, as well as a USB A-to-C dongle that will act as a port. While all of the screws you’ll need for assembly are included as well, you will need to source your own OLED Switch and Switch dock for various components.
To start the installation process, you’ll need to place the Switch battery into the base of the shell and secure it with some double-sided tape. After inserting the dock USB assembly into the OLED motherboard, screw it in next to the battery, then reconnect the power button ribbon cable and slide the PCB into its allotted space. Afterward, plug in the original fan and heat pipe assembly before slotting the game card reader daughterboard in its designated space, and don’t forget to plug in your SD card!
Once that’s done, you can put the 80mm fan into the mid-shell, then drop that on top of the base shell and secure the antennas with some double-sided tape. Then, connect your dock main board via the ribbon cable and screw it in place before plugging in the fan and USB dongle. With that done, you’re ready to drop on the shell cover and pat yourself on the back, as the TVii Switch Re-Shell mod is now complete!
The Pros, Cons, and Features of the Nintendo Switch Fan Mod
Truth be told, this mod doesn’t add any crazy new technical features, but that’s not important. This mod was made to keep the components cool, and it performs that task exceptionally well. Even if you take advantage of the overclocking capabilities this mod affords, your system will stay cooler than an average stock Switch. Provided you’re not playing inside an oven, you can expect temperatures that are several degrees lower than usual, ensuring your hardware doesn’t overheat.
Overall, the TVii Switch Re-Shell Mod performs its advertised task to sizable success, and in the process, offers a docked Switch gaming experience that’s better than the original in almost every way. Thanks to its straightforward installation process and low price, it’s an affordable and approachable mod that any interested party can perform without too much hassle.
While there are a few downsides to the mod, including audible fan noise, it’s easily one of the best ways to revive a broken Switch into something truly spectacular. Currently, the TVii Switch Re-Shell mod is only compatible with an OLED Switch, but Set has plans to design a mod that will accompany V1 and V2 models as well. Either way, if you are interested in the mod and have been thinking about performing it yourself, I wholeheartedly recommend it!
