GameCube RetroGEM

GameCube RetroGEM Kit is the Perfect HDMI Upscaler

The Nintendo GameCube is just one of the several sixth-generation home consoles that missed the boat on modern A/V inputs, making it cumbersome to connect to modern televisions. Thankfully, the modding community offers plenty of options, as usual, helping you hook up your system with fewer headaches. Now, a brand new HDMI mod with a storied reputation is promising perfect, lag-free visuals, along with awesome upscaling options. Let’s jump into this new GameCube HDMI mod and see if it lives up to the hype.

RetroGEM on Gamecube Makes the Difference

I’m no stranger to the RetroGEM upscaler kit by PixelFX, and with plenty of hands-on time, I can safely say it’s a worthwhile product. In the past, the RetroGEM has done wonders on the PlayStation 2, while also supporting consoles like the Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, and more. For their latest project, PixelFX has taken their RetroGEM upscaler to the Nintendo GameCube, and I can’t wait to check it out. If it works as well as it has in the past, the RetroGEM could be the definitive GameCube HDMI mod, but it all depends on the installation complexity and the final image quality.

The GameCube RetroGEM kit comes with all of the electronics you’ll need to perform the mod, but you’ll also need some standard soldering tools, as well as tools for cutting the console’s metal case. Included in the kit are the RetroGem board, multiple ribbon cables, a Wi-Fi antenna for online updating, and an assortment of mounts and other pieces for installation. Of course, you’ll also need a GameCube console, and the RetroGem supports every system model, so you’ll have no issues there.

PixelFX RetroGEM GameCube Installation Tutorial

Generally speaking, installing the GameCube RetroGEM kit requires a decent amount of soldering knowledge, and considering the cost of the mod, you should be very comfortable working on the innards of consoles as to not butcher the installation. I’ll outline the very basics of the installation here, but for detailed, step-by-step instructions, be sure to check out my in-depth GameCube RetroGEM mod video tutorial on my YouTube channel.

To get started, you’ll first need to open your GameCube and isolate the motherboard. The RetroGEM HDMI mod replaces one of the two ports on the back of the console, so before anything else, choose a port and remove it as carefully as possible. Next, install the included flex ribbon cable next to the video encoder chip, making sure to remove the two nearby capacitors so that the cable can rest flat. There are also multiple vias that you’ll need to solder the cable to, along with anchoring the cable by your chosen port.

Once that’s complete, you’re free to install the included RetroGEM mount, soldering it into its proper place and adding the included threaded mounts. On the RetroGEM board itself, solder the jumpers labeled “C”, “D”, “E”, “H”, and “J” to configure it for GameCube use. You’re now ready to install the board onto the mount, along with the Wi-Fi antenna, securing them in place with two screws. After placing the included thermal pad on the board, connect the final ribbon cable to the board and the HDMI port. From here, simply reassemble the GameCube, cut the metal casing to make room, and seat your port and antenna. With that done, the installation is finished!

The Pros, Cons, and Features of the GameCube RetroGEM

If you’ve used a RetroGEM before, the features should be pretty familiar, as the GameCube RetroGEM uses the same universal infrastructure as the rest. By pressing the associated button combo, you can bring up the RetroGEM main menu, allowing access to multiple video settings. This includes things like the upscaler, various filters, and other features to fine-tune your video output. It’s important to note that some of these features are locked behind the RetroGEM “shiny” upgrade, with the highest resolution output being 1080p on the “basic” version.

In short, the GameCube RetroGEM kit is another winner from PixelFX, providing their easy-to-use features and high quality on yet another home console. That said, installing this mod can be pretty challenging, so I recommend it mostly to veterans in the hobby, as beginners might find the soldering somewhat intimidating. It’s a low-profile, internal mod that gives you tons of great features, though the price reflects that. Overall, if you’re looking for a standalone solution that adds an HDMI port to your GameCube, along with built-in upscaling, the new RetroGEM kit is a great way to do so.
