Ultimate Modded PS2

Creating the Ultimate Modded PS2 Slim

It’s no secret: the PlayStation 2 is one of the best home consoles of all time, and I’m a particularly big fan of Sony’s sophomore system. Especially when you consider the PS2 Slim, in all of its sleek and compact glory, it’s incredibly hard to compete with this masterwork of a gaming machine. However, for as grand as the PlayStation 2 can be, it lacks some of the quality-of-life features that we’ve come to expect with modern consoles. Whether it’s extra storage, high-definition video, or even something as simple as wireless controllers, the PS2 has a bit of room for improvement. Of course, that’s where the mods come into play. Today, I’m getting under the hood of the PS2 Slim and transforming it into a beastly console that rivals its successors, by outfitting it with some of the best mods on the market. Let’s see how far we can push the PlayStation 2 as I set out to create the ultimate modded PS2 Slim!

Picking Out the Best PS2 Mods

For this extremely challenging build, I picked out three of the best PS2 mods available, which when combined, should provide all the amenities of a modern console. For starters, I’ll be installing the RetroGEM by PixelFX, which is an incredibly high-quality HDMI mod that offers crystal clear, HD video output. To boost storage space, the iFlash2PS2 mod by ARTHRIMUS will do the job right, removing all SD card size restrictions. Finally, the Methylene internal Bluetooth mod by Gusse will make it simple to use any Bluetooth controller with the system, even allowing us to boot the console using only our controller.

Each of these mods comes with a handful of parts that we’ll need to keep track of as we dive deep into the modding process. The RetroGEM comes with the custom board, along with some ribbon cables to make it a perfect fit into the PS2 Slim. The iFlash2PS2 is a bit more complex, containing the power board, some custom ribbon cables, and a 3D-printed retaining bracket that completely replaces the lower RF shielding of the console. To complete the mod, I also needed to purchase the iFlash-Solo SD adapter board, as it’s not included with the rest of the kit. The Methylene kit can be purchased either pre-assembled or as just the basic PCB board, but I recommend picking up the standalone kit so you don’t have to provide your own ESP32 SoC.

How to Build the Ultimate Modded PS2 Slim

If you’re thinking about performing this mod build yourself, know that it’s extremely difficult, requires a high level of soldering skill, and an abundance of patience. When installing this many mods at once, it’s incredibly easy to make a mistake or prevent progress by installing components out of order. I recommend checking out my ultimate PS2 Slim mod installation video on YouTube, which offers step-by-step instructions and visual aid, so you can see if this mod is truly something you want to commit to.

Like any other mod, you’ll need to start by isolating the motherboard, then you can get started by installing some of the components of the Methylene kit. Before you finish installing the Methylene kit, it’s important to solder in the RetroGEM ribbon cable first, otherwise you’ll run into a roadblock later on. After connecting some wires to power the board, you should be able to pair up a Bluetooth controller before moving on. Flipping the board over, we can now move onto installing the iFlash2PS2 ribbon cable, which is definitely one of the most challenging parts of the overall mod. With that side secure, all that’s left is to flip it back over, solder the other side of the ribbon cable, and then install the power board.

The RetroGEM requires quite a bit of wire installation and routing, so again, be sure to check my tutorial video on YouTube for clear and concise instructions. Whenever you install any of the flex ribbon cables, be sure to take your time and use plenty of flux. With the main flex cable installed, the RF shield now needs to be trimmed down so the RetroGEM can be properly mounted, and a space must be carved out of the console shell to accommodate the HDMI port. Once complete, you can now reassemble the RF shield to the motherboard, using the 3D-printed bracket from the iFlash2PS2 kit. After a bit more soldering and wire routing to configure the RetroGEM, along with antenna installation for wireless connectivity, we’re almost done. All that’s left is to properly prepare the iFlash-Solo board, before mounting it to the bracket and soldering it in place, then you can button up the system, as the mod is complete.

The Pros, Cons, and Features of the Ultimate PS2 Slim

While the installation process for this project is ridiculously tough, the results simply speak for themselves. With all of the mods installed, my PS2 Slim is simply brimming with cool features that make playing games all the more exciting and easy. The RetroGEM supports up to 1440p resolution, motion adaptive deinterlacing, and everything else to make the PS2’s graphics as clean as possible. Thanks to the iFlash2PS2 mod, along with some extra software, I can also use any size of SD card, including hefty 1TB solutions. This makes it incredibly easy to store and manage my game backups without constantly powering on my PC. Finally, the Methylene controller mod allows me to use any Bluetooth controller of my choosing, and by pairing up the PS2 with a DualShock 4, we’re afforded a next-gen style of accessibility.

Overall, this project was intimidating to say the least, but I found it entirely worthwhile in the end. Although the installation process was tough, requiring more precision soldering and mental gymnastics than normal, the features are to die for. In combination with the fantastic MemCard Pro 2, the three PS2 mods I chose for this project work together seamlessly, resulting in a gaming experience that feels as modern as I’d hoped. The visuals are as clean as can be, the control options are plentiful, and best of all, the PS2’s optical drive remains intact and can function as intended. While I encountered plenty of headaches during this project, I couldn’t be happier with the end result, as playing my PS2 Slim just got a whole heck of a lot more enjoyable.
